Endurance

I posted a while back about poor endurance, and after probably a year I can feel things getting better, but my big problem now is keeping endurance at loud volumes, does anyone have any excercises that they do to help this? Thanks for your help.

Re: Endurance

The only thing I can think of are Schilke "crash tones" There are some on "The Schilke Loyalist" web-site. Another one that I got from people that studied with him is Arban page 42 #16 (Fischer Edition) played ff-fff with good sound (but right at the edge of shattering hence the name) at half tempo (so quarter around 50 or even slower). Don't pratice this for too long 5 minutes is plenty.

I would take a look, a long careful look at a number of things. Do you use lots of pressure when you play a loud phrase? Are you changing your embouchure for loud playing? How is your breathing working? Find out specifically what is different about your performance at loud volumes. Here is where we begin.
Control of the chops. Control of air. Use of less pressure will be our goals.
If you don't have a teacher, get one! Playing loud is more than blowing hard and using strong left arm pressure. Use your brain to save your chops.
