Favorite Broadway Show

This is a topic on TPIN that fascinates me. I didn't answer it there because I wanted to see how it played out with players who weren't NYC guys. It is an interesting topic.

I recorded a few shows that never quite made it on Broadway. I was surprised to find "The Rink" on iTunes. It had Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera, but it didn't really make it. The trumpet part were ..........hard. I had other words in mind.

Another show on iTunes I stumbled on is "Dance A Little Closer." This show had Len Cariou in his first musical after "Sweeney Todd." George Rose, The star of "Drood." Alan Lerner was the director/writer of the show. We closed after one performance. The opening night cast party was cancelled at intermission Another hard show!

Billy Byers wrote a C trumpet part for me in "A Doll's Life." It was a one trumpet show with lots of notes for me. We recorded the show, but the cast album is very hard to come by. It's a collector's item

"Good Time Charley" was one of the more difficult shows I played. Joel Grey and Ann Rienking were the stars. The conductor would not let me out to play outside gigs, he said only Johnny Ware would be a suitable sub.........yeah I did not get off much.

"West Side Story" is my favorite show, but I love the Sondheim shows I have played. "A Little Night Music" is a delight even though there are less than 200 notes in 3 hours. "Sweeney Todd" is as intense as a Strauss opera. "Into The Woods" is also a C trumpet show. Alway ask for a double AND librarian

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

I've only played three -- Oklahoma, The Music Man, and Ragtime -- and out of those, Ragtime was far and away my favorite. The book is one of the best. It's unfortunate that it got overshadowed by The Lion King.

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

I’m a NYC gal who has never played a musical as a New Yorker. So I hope that it is okay if I respond to your thread, Wilmer. Before I had moved to New York City, I was playing in Pennsylvania. I’ve been playing them since high school and performed them in college and beyond. My favorite musical of all time to play would be “Guys & Dolls,” which was the last one that I had played. I loved everything about it.

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

"Favorite Broadway Show"? Isn't that an oxymoron? (sorry ... just a jaded New Yorker who's played too many 8 show weeks!)

Actually, "City of Angels" was a blast. Too bad is was "too hip for the room". Also, "West Side Story" is certainly a masterpiece, and there's some hauntingly beautiful stuff in "Sweeney Todd" (never played it, just heard it). I'd also add "Little Women" to the mix. (We used to call it "Little Known" due to it's abnormally short run.) It's a small, chamber-like score (composed by Jason Howland) with all ACOUSTIC instruments, beautifully orchestrated by Kim Scharnberg.

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

I had a blast playing "The Full Monty." It had some James Brown esque parts, some challenging upper register stuff, some blowing.....well, 4 bars anyway, and some hilarious lyrics (if you like that sort of thing).

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

Purely as a listener, I will succumb to my inner girlie man and admit to holding Les Miserables as my favorite and My Fair Lady as a close second. I love WSS to death but what can I say? When I leave the theatre after seeing LM I'm uplifted. After WSS I'm bummed but the music is classic, no doubt or argument there.

I'm a pathetic, sappy, happy ending kinda guy.

Re: Favorite Broadway Show

I love West Side Story, too. And Sweeney Todd...even though I never played it, is really cool from an audience perspective.

They appeal to my darker side...
