Frank Foster Band

They played great yesterday.
The young trumpet section-Freddy Hendrix, Etienne Charles, Kenyatta Beasley and Eddie Allen sounded "Basie-like" in their section work.
Jimmy Owens and Joe Wilder were there digging the fine music.
Cecil Bridgewater was leading the band yesterday. They swung their rear ends off.

Thanks for the update.

Re: Frank Foster Band

I don't know if Frank's health would allow him to be there with the band. Their version of "Shiny Stockings" was quite good

That's a shout chorus that never ends! Many a trumpeter has cursed Frank over that one. Still one of the best big band charts ever written.

Re: Frank Foster Band

I agree Tony, but it is a great arrangement. I got to meet and work with Frank Foster when he was Artist in Residence at NJCU a few years ago. I was the old guy in the band finishing a Master's degree. I remember suffering through that lead part.
Mr. Wise, Freddie Hendrix was in that band at the same time getting a degree, he's a great player. I saw him with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra not too long ago.

Re: Frank Foster Band

Frank Foster, a fabulous musician, player, composer, arranger. I hung out in his improvisation workshop when I was in graduate school – in English at SUNY Buffalo in the mid-70s. For whatever reason, no one had any problem with someone from the English department hanging out in a Music Dept. course and, for that matter, a good many local jazz musicians would come by too. One tune I particularly loved was one of Frank's originals, a 24-bar minor-key blues waltz called, I believe, "Simone."

He also brought in some of his big-band charts. I vaguely remember something called "The Ithaca Suite" that was wicked.
