I just had the opportunity to play the first piano concerto, which has an awesome trumpet part. Which gets me thinking... what are some other fun concertos to play? The ones that come immediately to mind are the Ravel Piano Concerto, the Shostakovich Piano (and Trumpet Concerto), and the Berg Violin Concerto.

Stravinsky wrote great parts in the Violin concerto and the Piano Concerto. The Rachmaninoff Rhapsody and the Third Piano Concerto have nice trumpet moments. Don't laugh, but I love to play the Lizst Second Piano Concerto Well, heck, I love to play Les Preludes! Poulenc wrote some nice stuff in his Piano concertos. The Barber concerto for Violin, and the Piano concerto are tricky.
There are many, many more that keep the asst. principal player honest.

Sorry Jimi, quick sidetrack...

I hope there is a re-birth in interest to performing Bernstein's Symphonies. I really enjoy them, especially the Kaddish Symphony, my favorite.

Speaking of cello concerti...

Lighetti and Lutoslawski both have killer trumpet parts... more fun to listen to than play, I'm sure...

I agree! (so long as they don't bring back the Mass along with the symphonies...)

Re: Fun Concertos

I found that Poulenc Eiffel Tower polka is quite fun too...Though I would call it rather funny than fun parts....

Re: Fun Concertos

Bartok 2nd Piano Concerto. We're doing the 3rd this week, which also has its moments.

I second the aforementioned concertos by Berg, Ravel and Prokofiev.

Chopin 1st- I'm not a fan of the piece at all - the 3rd mvt sounds like it's in the wrong octave, hanging up on high Bs throughout.

Love the Barber Violin Concerto.

Ginastera Harp Concerto?

Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante

Adler Horn Concerto

Adams Violin Concerto

The list goes on and on.

There are some really hairy moments in these pieces, which *never* get covered in school.

Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini.....some really delicate and exposed trumpet writing.
