![]() ![]() | Grease Hi Wilmer, I'm going to be subbing in a production of Grease at the end of the month. I went out and found the original broadway cast recording, but I listened to two or three tunes and I'm pretty sure it was just a rhythm section (there may have been some very soft winds in the background, but it was hard to hear). Have you played this show? Is there another recording I should try to get? I'm going to audit a show about a week before I play, but it's my first time playing at this theatre and I'm trying to do my homework... Thanks, Jimi

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There were no trumpets in the original production of the show. I guess they added trumpets to add some character(s) to the show Wilmer

![]() | There was a revival in 1994, and it toured for quite a while. It had 3 horns- trumpet, tenor sax, and trombone. It's an odd instrumentation. When the trumpet has some music to play around 'C' on top of the staff, the next closest voice is a good two octaves away. Although the part is by no means a killer, it does feel quite naked in such spots. This is the album you're looking for: http://www.amazon.com/Grease-Broadwa...e=UTF8&s=music |

![]() | Joey is right. 3 horns. Only 1 tpt. I thought it was just a gas to play. I think the highest note is around F# or so... There have been multiple versions of the tune, "Beauty School Dropout". The one like in the movie version with Frankie Avalon...very boring and bland... then there was a version touring around for a while that was a "very" hip version in a funky 12/8...smokin' arrangement... They had a guy on tour that was just wild and could sing the heck out of the tune. It became a show stopper...which is quite a twist from the "Avalon" version. Anyway...I'm not so sure about the "naked" part. It is all well written, but I get the point. Sparce....so it is all "you"! Still, a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy it!!

![]() ![]() | Hi guys, Thanks for the insights. I'm guessing they'll be doing an arrangement of the revival, so maybe some of the "naked" spots will be fixed (or maybe not Wilmer, Do you have any advice about subbing? Obviously I want to play well and cover the basics, but is there any basic philosophy to going in and playing? I feel like the best thing I could do is play so that no one realizes that the original guy isn't there. Thanks, Jimi
