Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

I hate to get a part that has fingerings written in. I received one today that not only had fingerings , it also has letters in INK on the music.

What bugs me even more is when someone has written actual notes in the staff rather than transposing. Talk about confusing. And in ink.... Why would anyone do that in ink???

What's even worse is that half the time when you find fingerings or transpositions written in, they're not even right. You just wonder how it was ever played.

The trumpet is a very flexible instrument! Many times if you see fingerings that sort of look like Bb, but not quite, they are for the Eb.

Ink is about as low as it gets. Shows a big lack of respect for the score AND the next player.

I hate when people write the fingerings into parts. The first thing I do when I get a new part is erase all the pencil marks on it. That way I can write what matters to me and not someone else.

I hate when people pencil all of the "courtesy" accidentals in the staff when they are in the key signature. If it is a rare mark written above, in () it isn't too bad. I find all of the extra pencil very distracting.

Oh dear, I'm guilty of this, just received an (admittedly easy) part for Iolanthe and put in the fingerings (with pencil) Does anyone have any advice on how to improve transposition, or is it simply a case of the more you do it the better you get?

It is ONLY a case of doing more transposition. There is no other way. Do it EVERY day.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

The only time I'll pencil in a fingering is when I want to use an alternate that I wouldn't normally use.

How about when people circle passages, so they concentrate on them more; to me that means tacit. Even better is circling every key change.

Too many markings can be visually distracting. Sometimes less is more.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrr- My Pet Peeve!

Only time I've ever had to mark music was either to stress a dynamic that the director wants exaggerated, or to make sure I don't miss a key signature change. Always use a pencil, too. My Marine-veteran director hands out ten pushups per pen mark!
