Thanks for the tips. They go along with what bugleboy suggested as well as other postings on this forum. I doubt that I really have the 'soul' to play serious jazz but it will be fun trying to learn and maybe joining with some other like-minded searchers to expand our horizons.

Re: Hello From Brooklyn

Well said of course, Wilmer.
To the Comebackkid: You can always find time for what you love.
When I was in school, I was required to spend X amount of time
with my principle instrument and related instruments, plus I had
the academic classes and work, and I had many (virtually daily)
rehearsals or recitals or ball games (where I was required to lead
the band), not to mention my extracurricular musical endeavors.
Guess what...even though I carried more than the ALLOWED
class hours every semester and obviously had no time for anything
extra, I found time for fun and the girls (that's sort of a redundant
statement don't you think?). I found time to get into the woods
for tracking and backpacking, time for bicycling, and time for dating.
Did I mention dating? Then there were parties, and did I mention dating?
I got my education, built my musical proficiency, and had a ball
while I did it. My instrumental director, who became my very good friend,
told me later that he quit the university when my crowd left because
it just wasn't fun anymore. When he met my wife (he hadn't seen me
in ten years, and he had no way of knowing I would be nearby) he told her,
"You must be married to Bob" (actually he used my old nickname.
When she asked how he could make such a wild but accurate guess,
he replied, "nobody else could be as crazy as him."
We find time for what we love and enjoy. I find time now for my family
and FIRST for God, but I find time for my playtime.
That's also how you learn jazz. It has to be important enough
for you to find time, other jazzmen, and opportunities. There
is no fast road to great music, be it charted or improvisational.
Bob

Re: Hello From Brooklyn

Hello Wilmer. Sam Burtis here. Glad to find you. Please check out my post (BREAKTHROUGH!!! (I have finally broken the embouchure code. I think.)) in the Trumpet Discussion area. I think I may have finally figured out something about brass playing.

'Bout time!!!

Later...
