I would choose Miles Davis. He was the perfect balance between being tecnically trained and playing from his heart, not to mention that incredible sound

John"Birks" Gillespie..........for the jazz side of me
Diz is the total package. Composer, player, teacher and all around ground-breaker.

Herbert L. Clarke

It seems like many of the great players and teachers in America are part of his "trumpet" lineage.

This is a tough question!

I can't decide between Bud Herseth or Doc Severinsen.

Can I choose Richard Martin? - Principal Trumpet of Northern Sinfonia (in the UK) and the guy who actually did teach me at university. He changed the way I play in every way, all for the better.
Without him I wouldn't play, nor teach, in the manner I now do.

I once heard a story where someone said that they wouldn't want to be taught by Wynton Marsalis - they wanted to be taught by the person who taught Wynton!
