I'm glad this isn't on the list!

Hearing Manny play the Copland Third reminded me of how grateful I am that it was never on audition lists.
Let's start a list of pieces that somehow have gotten under the audition radar
!- Prokofiev- Scythian Suite.......The Eb part is outrageous!
2- William Schuman-Third Symphony
3-Ginastera- Harp Concerto.....That's right, there's a high passage that will scare you to death

That's a start
Wilmer

How about Ginastera Danza Final? I've yet to see that one but, boy oh boy is it ever all over the place at the end!

The one from "Estancia?" That one is split between the two trumpet players.......here's the way I did it the last time I played it. Alternate playing the whole lick with the second player. Arrange it so that you have time to get the mute in for the high lick. It's an ensemble lick, you don't have to kill the woodwinds

Yeah, but sometimes it's fun to try... I wonder why the bass clarinets have those clear plastic thingies between them and me?

Pulcinella makes it on the list every once in a while, doesn't it? I know it's in a lot of excerpt books...

Phil and I auditioned the same day at Eastman, when we were both nervous youngsters. Great guy, great player. I'll have to look up his etudes, I don't know them.

I played at one of his masterclasses a year or two ago. He gave a Snedecor Etude book to anyone that played. I really liked it, but can't seem to remember where I last left the thing...darn.

Why are etudes on a list for an orchestra position?

Re: I'm glad this isn't on the list!

I'm not sure why, Wilmer, but there have been several auditions requiring Etudes in recent years:

Baltimore 2nd (upcoming) - Snedecor Low Etude #18
MET Principal (a few years ago) - Brandt Orchestral Etude #11
NYP 4th/Utility (sometime in the late '90's) - Bitsch #5

I know there's a few others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
