Joe DiMonte is on a distinguished road
Jazz & Comedy.

Last evening I attended a jazz gig featuring James Moody and the gig was a combination of music and comedy that was very, very entertaining.

They say laughter adds 8 years to one's life and since I plan on living forever,
I'm prepared to exchange those 8 years for a recording of Charles 'Buddy' Bolden.

At any rate, here's my local culture broker description of Mr.Moody's show:

Music Review: Saxophonist Moody puts on engaging show in Manchester
Thursday, September 27, 2007
By Nate Guidry, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Most could only imagine accomplishing what saxophonist James Moody has musically -- Jazz Masters Fellowship Award and International Jazz Hall of Fame, to name a couple honors. Yet he remains gracious and considers himself a student of the music.

Performing the first of five concerts last night at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Moody and his mature quartet, which featured drummer Dennis Mackrel, pianist David Hazeltine and bassist Todd Coolman, kept the crowd engaged throughout the evening.

They opened the evening with "Invitation," featuring strong solos from each band member.

About midway through the performance, vocalist Jimmy Scott joined the group for three songs.

Sitting in a wheelchair, Scott sang "Embraceable You" and "Motherless Child" and made his biggest impression on "I Cried For You."

The group performs at 8 p.m. tonight.

Nate Guidry can be reached at nguidry@post-gazette.com or 412-263-3865.
