![]() | Jimmy Owens The 36th Annual University of Pittsburgh Jazz Concert held on Saturday,Nov 4,2006 hosted nine (9) exceptional and internationally known jazz musicians at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland section of Pittsburgh,Pennyslvania. The venerable guest performers included Jimmy Owens and Ocsar Brasher on trumpet's,Patrice Rushen on piano,Nestor Torres on flute, Abraham Laboriel on bass, Donald Harrison on alto sax, Ron Affif on guitar, Dave Pike on vibraphone and Winard Harper on drums. It was a great event and Jimmy was awesome with his fluglehorn solo performance on " I'm In The Mood For Love" . Each year after intermission, announcements are made as to which musicians are inducted into the International Academy Of Jazz Hall of Fame. Unfortunately,I didn't stick around after intermission as the guy behind me with the "hacking cough" didn't have the common courtesy to leave the damn hall/building. The 2005 inductees as I recall were were James Moody and Chet Baker. The first to be inducted since its inception in 1978 were: Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Edward "Duke" Ellington. Art Tatum Jr. Long Live Jazz

![]() | Hey KillerJoe! Thanks for mentioning Jimmy Owens.... I have followed his path, ever since that old issue of JAZZ IMPROV. www.improv.com that had a great story about his world. I can't remember which issue. If I find it..I will try to run a scan for you, KJ! in the burg. A few years ago...you could hear Jimmy Owens wonderful heartfelt flug background music on the HBO specials about the " NYC professional Ladies of the Night" My wife didn't appreciate seeing me watching all that XXX stuff and I think that she really didn't understand that it was just Jimmy's wonderful soul music...that embellished that actually quite sad and heart wrenching story line about their very real struggles to simply just exist. |

Trust me Brother Don,if you only purchased one issue of that JAZZ IMPROV magazine, you won't find it anywhere or place within the entire Pacific North West. Some 4 years ago,you forwarded that magazine to me and on the envelope and below the senders name you sketched a trumpeter emptying his spit valve on some potted plants. I'm prepared in returning same in exchange for a case of Robert Mondavi Oakville Vintage. What say thee ?

![]() | Ron Barrows I'm sitting here reading most of the posts from "loud players" to "warming up and down" jumping jacks/side straddle hops while listening to "State Street Sweet" by Gerald Wilson on my stereo. Listening to Ron Barrows solo performance on Carlos is what I consider the real deal. For those of you who already have the CD,I highly recommend you take another listen to cut #9 (Carlos),and those of you that don't have the CD,attempt to procure a copy and sit and listen to Ron's performance and you will come to the realization why we old timers love that warm, bold, and melodic sound. The rumor that jass is dead is a bold face LIE !

![]() | I just listened to Mingus's new old release, the UCLA concert of music supposed to have been played in Monterey, or whatever Sue calls it. An all brass band except for Charles McPherson:Jimmy Owens, Hobart Dotson and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, Julius Watkins on french horn and Howard Johnson on tuba (who picks up the bottom when Mingus switches to piano). Jimmy Owens tears up on flugelhorn on Don't Let It Happen here. The whole thing is a glorious concert, even when Mingus fires most of the band and plays with a quartet and then brings everybody back. If you like jazz at all, please look that one up:it was originally released as an LP and only 200 copies were pressed. I have a cassette of one, but to have it now available is just great. It's on iTunes too for those who like iTunes. Michael McLaughlin There was never a good war, or a bad peace. Benjamin Franklin

I had the wonderful opportunity to see Jimmy Owens perform with the Charles Tolliver Big Band at the Jazz Standard in New York City in February 2005. Jimmy’s solos were wonderful! Janell

Wilmer....WOW! HOW DID YOU KNOW I WAS BOTH A "RIPPLE" PAPER BAGGER FAN...Even though many folks may disssssagree with me...but I always thought I played better licks and juicier improv...after about a half bottle of Ripple in a paper bag... speaking of paper bags...try doubling up a couple of paper bags..and try using them for a mute...The double layer really adds a little buzz or zing to the trumpet's voicing. Kinda cool... HEY WILMER...JOE!!! WHAT OTHER KINDS OF DO-DAD'S ARE GREAT SUBS FOR MAKE-DOO IMPROTO MUTES? | |

The questions raised by the Wise One are too important to go unanswered. Many, many years ago,my elders in the Bowery and Washington Square Park taught me that the cork was a nuisance. In addition, they politely informed me that when stepping out into the evening, two pints were required and only the one placed in the hip pocket required the brown bag. The one placed in the inner breast pocket of the coat did not require a bag as there was no law against one placing their head into their coat to take a swig. In conversations with Elliott Golden the then Chief Assistant District Attorney of Kings County, the latter was confirmed to be the gospel truth. In parting,I've always wondered what Brooklyners were drinking after the Shaeffer Brewery closed. Thanks for asking and I apologize if I got carried away as VINO is too important a topic to go unnotice. Cheers !
