![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A Jo Jones Ramble Thanks K.J. for this Papa Jo quote:- "I'm the richest drummer that's lived in fifty years, because nobody ever had what I have the pleasure of sitting up with a band night after night that had a Herschel Evans, a Lester Young, a Harry Edison, a Buck Clayton, a Dicky Wells, a Benny Morton, a Freddie Green, a Walter Page, and a Bill Basie... " -Papa Joe Jones When I moved to NYC from Baltimore I renewed some old acquaintances, Jo Jones was one of them. I spent many afternoons at Jim and Andy's listening to Jo talk about music and musicians. Jo said I didn't know much and he was going to educate me. Buddy Brister and P.G.Lowery were names I had never heard of before. They were cornet soloists from the early part of the 20th century. These were the first names Jo mentioned. Only recently have I gotten information on them. Here is a book that will open your eyes on that period. Check out this book- The Cornet Compendium: History and Development of the 19th Century Cornet Wilmer

Prior to young Josh's arrival on 48th Street,Jim & Andy's was where the MIRACLE workers hung out. Papa Jo remarks to you were mild and kind. I remember circa 1964 during my 'live' exposure to Jazz I met a man who while in a casual conversation proceeded to ask me 'leading' questions about jazz and his final question was: "Do you really believe that Jazz started with you and your era ." I stood silent and later found out that that man was Paul Quinichette. His performance at a house party sometime later confirmed to this jazz aficionado that there are many hidden gems in the wide world of music.
