Johnny Coles

Did I mention that today is Jaybee Ceebee's birthday?
They don't make them like him anymore. JC was hilarious. One of the characters on the Cosby Cartoon show speaks the way he did.
I miss him.

Li'l Johnny was a force to reckon with. Sadly,he passed on our birthday (Dec 21).

May he rest in peace.

I drove from Gainesville to Lakeland Florida in 1979 to see Buddy Rich. Swingin' band...first jazz trumpet solo comes around and down on the end of the section trumpet is a little, older, black gentleman who just plays his ass off. Buddy introduces him..... JOHNNY COLES!!! I couldn't believe that a guy like that would be out on the road with Buddy, but boy, was I glad he was. Great player.....check out the video of the Charles Mingus band in Oslo, 1965 (or was it '64?). Mingus, Jaki Byard, Dannie Richmond, Clifford Jordan, Eric Dolphy, and Coles. Great shit....
