Last night at the Blue Note

My buddy Ted Curson and his wife Marge were celebrating their wedding anniversary yesterday at the Blue Note. Lots of familiar faces were there. Clark Terry and James Moody were the headliners. Jon Faddis was there hanging out with some of his trumpet studio. Our own Dow30 was there, it is always great to hang with Kim. Frank Greene was there. It was a wonderful night.

Clark called out to all the trumpet trumpet players to join him on stage. Thank goodness I left my mouthpiece home Faddis took his "A Game" to even a higher level.......and I had a ringside seat. Jon was playing his Schilke, it is a much heavier horn than I remember Jon playing.
Now here's the good part..........Ted didn't have his horn, but he did have his mouthpiece. So did one of Jon's students. Jon passed his horn to Ted. Ted sounded like himself. Ted's sound is kind of Milesish, with a bit of Brownie mixed in. Jon's student, I didn't catch his name, played with a totally different more contemporary approach.
The three players sounds completely different even though they played the same horn. Hmmmmmmm

More later,

Wilmer

Re: Last night at the Blue Note

I was thinking of coming down for that Clark Terry, James Moody show, but due to school conflicts and money, I wasn't able to get the trip fully planned.
I think I would have had a heart attack if I showed up for a Clark Terry and James Moody show and in the audience as well was Ted Curson and Jon Faddis and you. Talk about getting your moneys worth.

Re: Last night at the Blue Note

Clark Terry must be in his 80's. I played with him while in college in 1969. He taught me how to round house breath. That's cool, didn't know he was still giging.

Re: Last night at the Blue Note

Ct's 86 and doing remarkably well, especially if you know how much he's struggled with his health in the past few years. I just saw him a few weeks ago and as always he inspired me to get my tail back in the shed.

He's one of the last living legends of jazz. A true hero of my life and the reason I am a musician.

Re: Last night at the Blue Note

Was a lot of fun hearing Moody, CT and friends all week. Took me a couple of days to recuperate, you guys kept me out way after my bedtime!

Ted has just about the best facial hair ever.
I don't think many other people could pull it off.
