Joe DiMonte is on a distinguished road
Leonard Graham a/k/a Idrees Sulieman

Born on this day in 1923 was Leonard Graham, trumpeter a/k/a Idrees Sulieman .
He is noted as being one of the 1st trumpeters to master "circular breathing."

There is an IMPULUSE recording out there titled "AMERICANS IN EUROPE" where he can be heard playing with the Don Byas (tenor sax) /Bud Powell (piano) Quintet that included Jimmy Woode, bass and Joe Harris on drums.

His performance on "ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE" is worth the cost of the CD.

Happy listening.

He is also on a really swingin' album called three trumpets. It features Art Farmer, Donald Byrd and Idrees playing bebop.

He also played with Monk did he not?

Great player.

I posted this before in an earlier note, but I was fortunate enough to meet and play with Mr. Sulieman when he returned to his hometown of St. Pete Florida where I grew up. He was a gracious, polite man and man could he play!
