| Piano User | Re: Little Johnny C Ha ha -- Johnny Coles! An underrated monster! If you haven't seen it, check out the DVD of Mingus live in Oslo in 1965. Mingus, Jackie Byard, Dannie Richmond, Clifford Jordan, Eric Dolphy, and Johnny Coles. it's killer! I remember going to see Buddy Rich in 1979 or 1980. It was a killer band with the average age of about 19. During one of the early numbers this trumpet player started improvising his ass off. I looked up and saw 4 guys around 19 (at least they looked around 19) and the guy playing was this little black fellow who was much older than the rest. I didn't recognize him at first, but after the tune Buddy introduced him - Johnny Coles. Man was that a surprise! He was great. Buddy spent the whole night yelling at the trumpet section and threatening to fire them, and every time I could hear him yell "Not you Johnny!!!" HA HA HA.... bigtiny |
