| Re: Manny's in town! He will also be playing Mahler 1 at Avery Fisher Hall. They played it here in Minnesota yesterday morning and tonight. The Orchestra was great. If there are still tickets, It is not to be missed. Osmo has a good interpretation and Manny and the brass do not disappoint. Hopefully audiences in NY are more respectful that audiences in MN. | Re: Manny's in town! As expected, the class by Mr. Laureano was terrific. Every time I hear him live or on recording, I'm taken in by his beautiful musicianship. Many thanks to Mr. Laureano for spending time with us. Thank you also to Mr. Riccomini for inviting us from outside Mannes to attend. Mike |

![]() ![]() | Re: Manny's in town! It was magnificent. David Krauss, James Ross and Ken De Carlo were there. I hadn't seen Dave in years. The Mannes trumpet studio is strong. One fine player after another played, they were all wonderfully talented. Now about the class............ it felt like my experiences at Marlboro thirty years ago. It was about the music, there was not one equipment question And the music was great. Manny started by playing "Yellow Bird" on his mouthpiece as a warm-up. He explained that this was an alternative to the "Northwestern Anthem".....you know the one. When he asked the group if they knew the tune, his question was met with blank stares. I think only Jimmy Owens, Manny and I knew the song The members of the studio played a varied selection of works. The "Arutunian Concerto," "Keating Intrada," a Bitsch etude, a Pictures excerpt, something by Bohme and the trumpet solo from the "Concerto in F" by Gershwin were the works played. I am trying to find the Bix version I posted a while back. It was beautiful. The players were asked to explore the vocal side of the music, this was the approach at Marlboro also. Every last one the the guys sounded better after they played for Manny. I have to run. I'll be Bach Wilmer |

| Re: Manny's in town! Wilmer, I agree with you. I thought the class was a huge success! It was great to finally meet you! Manny is an amazing person and player. Listening to him buzz "Maria" from West Side Story, I thought I was listening to someone really singing, not buzzing. It sounded like the human voice! That gave me goosebumps. I thought Manny's ideas had a very profound and sudden impact on each of the players involved, and I am sure they'll be talking about it for some time. As for the timing of the class, I apologize to all who couldn't be there. Unfortunately, it seems that more and more orchestras are doing the "hit and run"-type tour thing. I litererally picked Manny up at the hotel 3 minutes after he arrived , and today he had rehearsal all morning, concert at 3Pm, and will leave from the hall to get to the airport to leave! I felt that he was TOO important of a player to pass up, and I believe, especially after last night, no one will disagree! It was great to see so many "heavyweights" interested in the class. Seeing you, Jimmy Owens, David Krauss, and Jim Ross was fantastic! Manny gave superb, individualized advice to each player, and even though he had been going all day, he even extended the class an extra 1/2 hour, just so he could hear everyone! In everything he played, and everything he said, you could hear the passion he has for music! I certainly gathered a ton of ideas to use for myself! It was a great night! Thank you Manny Laureano!!! |
