Mel Broiles- Studies and Duets

I just received a copy of Book 1 of the Studies and Duets

I lent my copy to a student many, many years which was never returned. It is like meeting an old friend after a long absence. This book contains a couple of my favorite duets.
I was on a break, back to Mel Broiles

They are fun to go back to. I like the third book for piccolo trumpet. The duets are a bit tough for my students. Another book to return to is Top Tones for the Trumpeter. Instead of playing them up to the standard tempo, I'm slowing them down and seeing how lyrically I can play them.

I have a photocopy of an"etude" hand written by Mel Broiles. It's basically every excerpt you could think of, written back to back to back. I had a friend who studied with him at Juilliard. He told me Broiles told him to learn to play it down, then he would win a job. Not sure if he was joking... I've never tried it.
