Messiah Choices

I'm a dinosaur, I do the Handel on the D. I always felt the piccolo was over-matched when played with one of those LOUD Bass singers. I smack them down with the D

Re: Messiah Choices

Wilmer,
In the few times that I've done the entire Messiah, I've done it on pic........however the very first time that I did just "The Trumpet Shall Sound" (about 24 years ago) it was on a D trumpet that I borrowed from Peter Archer. I'm starting to feel that the piece overall doesn't speak as well on pic as I remember it on the D.
It's easy for the pic to get buried with a full chamber orchestra, Organ, choir and soloists....especially when the room is working against you acoustically.
My kids have always thought that Dinosaurs were cool.......I'll join you on this one.

Wilmer,

The G trumpet, which seems to have disappeared these days.

Best,

My preference is Eb. I just find the trills lay a little better and can play a my Eb side a little bit better in tune. I play the second part on D regardless. I've played it on picc too, when the second player shows up with nothing but a picc. Messiah lays surprisingly well on Eb trumpet.

Re: Messiah Choices

I guess I'm a loser! I'm playing it next week on A picc...my 2nd player is using a D though.

Hah...I just like piccolo, but that's sorta one of my strengths as a player, so I enjoy it!

Re: Messiah Choices

I love the piccolo too, as it comes very easily to me, however, I just dig the bigger, deeper sound that a bigger horn affords. I really need to get a G trumpet!

Re: Messiah Choices

I played the first part on the Hallelujah Chorus on a D trumpet twice.

I played the second part on the Hallelujah Chorus on C trumpet. The first player used an Eb cornet. My mother was the choir director so her trumpet player got the gig and I showed up on Sunday with second part.

I played the Easter portions of the Messiah using "A" piccolo for the first parts. Once on Saturday night and two services on Sunday. I used a C somewhere in it but can't recall which pieces.

I watched the Boston Pops use A pic's on PBS TV so I figured it must be ok.

Susan Slaughter used D trumpet for "The Trumpet Shall Sound."
I have not been asked to play "The Trumpet Shall Sound" but I think it would blend better with a D. I no longer have a D so I would have to do it on the A. I hate to think how much I would have to practice to pull it off.

Re: Messiah Choices

I'm playing the Hallelujah chorus this Sunday and am using a Piccolo. It's a small choir and is just myself and the organist. The first time I performed with this church the Choir director had a look of fear but was please that I didn't overpower the choir. I'm also performing a Purcell Sonata.

Re: Messiah Choices

I've always liked my Scherzer piccolo with a Beck A pipe. Handel seemed more comfortable with Old Testament themes, and despite the lyrical implication of big 'ol soldier trombone playing angels, (using Luther's German, anyway) Handel's theology seems to call for Botticelli angels. Besides, my D is a dog, and the Scherzer lets me rattle windows just fine.

Re: Messiah Choices

I'm usually on 2nd, so my horn choice is D trumpet -- the notes/fingerings lay better for me. My colleagues on 1st usually have used an A picc. It's been a pretty good match, IMHO.
