Miles Davis' Electric Period Late 60's - Early 70's

Wilmer, what do you think of this era in Davis' career? I'm interested in your thoughts (particularly) about "In a Silent Way", "Tribute to Jack Johnson" and "Bitches Brew". Thank you.

Trumpet Student-

If you're interested in this stuff, check out Paul Tingen's book Miles Beyond, it's one of the best books on Miles out there and deals with exactly the period you're talking about.

I'm doing an all Miles concert on Thursday and really have started to dig deep in the electric stuff. Contrary to the "traditionalist" view of some jazz trumpeters I feel EVERYTHING Miles played is gold.

Dig this!

Miles plays his rear end off on these records. My buddy Joe Zawinul and the rest of the rhythm section play like they are possessed.
Great stuff from the "Prince of Darkness."

and the music just keeps getting better, until Miles' retirement in 1975. On the Corner, Pangaea, and Agharta are 3 of the heaviest recordings ever made, in my opinion. Possessed indeed...

A very interesting comparison is the two "Jack Johnson" albums made by Miles and Wynton. Miles did his for a "blaxpotation" film while Wynton's was for a Ken Burns documentary. Both are excellent. More than his trumpet playing, Wynton's composing and arranging really stand out on his Jack Johnson CD.

Miles score was also for a documentary, I don't know if the film ever made it to the light of day.

Don't forget that most of those traditionalists are consumers .
A few months ago I picked up a CD where the player (trumpeter) added
a turntable (vinyl record spinner) player into the band.

A few weeks ago a Wise man asked which came first: " The chicken or the egg ?" - Many have credited Miles for the electric era when Joe Zawinul pre-dated him in this arena.

Wilmer, didn't you play some pic stuff on a Weather Report record? I Sing the Body Electric? I seem to remember something, Unknown Soldier or Second Sunday In August or one of those tracks.
