![]() ![]() ![]() | Monday Night at Minton's Playhouse I finally got uptown to Minton's. I was subbing in the New York Classics Band. There were many old buddies in the band. Warren Smith led the band in place of Jack Jeffers. Jack is on tour with a Duke Ellington band. Warren is a walking music monument. In college he played in a Harry Partch ensemble. Warren moved to NYC and played with Janis Joplin, he was her band leader. He played with Max Roach in M'Boom, Gil Evans band, Sam Rivers and.......The New York Jazz Gang. The group that paired the two kids, Ed Carroll and Wynton Marsalis. Let me talk about the trumpet section. Mac Gollehan, Junior Vega and Kevin Louis. This is a section of seriously ........."SHUT YOUR MOUTH"............ guys Now let me talk about Kevin Louis. This young New Orleans player, played most of his solos on cornet. His voice is one of the freshest that I have heard in a long, long time. He has assimilated the masters of the past and has come up with a fresh new thing. Watch this guy! I hope they ask me back. The band is there every Monday Night Wilmer |

I await Mr.Louis arrival in the 'Burgh or on one of my annual Caribbean Cruise. Now that you ventured to 118th Street,I'm curious to learn if Smalls' Paradise on 135th around St.Nicholas is still open and featuring jazz ? Although not a bopper, back in the day,Wilt Chamberlain use to hold court at Smalls' and my man Sonny Crawford who played hoops in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks was the host. | |

The woman is thought to be Billie Holiday. http://www.devradowrite.com/wp-conte...nsimg_1885.JPG The 4 trumpets and 3 trombones sit on stage. The saxes and the bandleader have the floor all to themselves Mic and Junior are playing in the stratosphere. Wilmer |

| Re: Monday Night at Minton's Playhouse Sounds great Wilmer. That is definitely a talented section. Who were you subbing for? Who does the arrangements for the band? |

| Piano User | Re: Monday Night at Minton's Playhouse I got a chance to play with Kevin Louis when we played back to back in different bands at Barbes last year. He invited me to sit in, and then wouldn't let me stop, because his idea of hospitality was to make me part of his musical event. What a warm, generous player. And needless to say, swung like crazy. |
