![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Mouthpiece juggling I have never felt that a quick change of mouthpiece gave me that extra boost some of my colleagues seem to get when the switch mpcs. I play pretty much the same mouthpiece from the beginning to the end of pieces. I change for the higher horns and flugel, and that's it. Lew Soloff carries an amazing array of mouthpieces. Do you? ![]() ![]() | Wilmer, I carry two trumpet mouthpieces on the gig. Both exactly the same same mouthpiece with the exception of one being gold and the other silver. I normally use the gold one, but sometimes during a demanding lead chart I will switch to the silver one. Usually just because I like the feel of a cold mouthpiece on my lips.. I leave them on the stand where they get cold or cool. -cw-

![]() | This is a very timely question for me. I have for years played on a Denis Wick 3CW but a few months ago I started experimenting with a Schilke 14A4A when playing lead parts. That experimenting has kind of expanded and now I switch depending on the piece and the range I’m asked to play on that piece. I find that if the entire piece is third space C and above that I slot considerably better with no noticeable loss in tone quality when playing the Schilke, however I do not like the tonality of that mouthpiece when a piece goes below the staff. My intonation on both is equal, but I just find the tone in the lower register is better on the Denis Wick, and equal in the upper register, but it is just easier to slot when above the staff on the Schilke. Today I played a job where I only had to do three pieces. I played two on the Schilke, but had a long solo on the third that went below the staff three times, so I used the Wick for that one. I don’t witch during a piece, but I must now admit that I no longer use just one MP for all my trumpet work.

![]() | I'm largely a section and solo player and most of the music I play sits comfortably with the one mouthpiece. I put it in at the beggining of the gig and the next time I touch it is to put it away in the case. Regards, Trevor |

![]() | I don't switch mouthpieces in the middle of a concert or gig. Almost always, I'm using Curry 1DE unless my chops are just exhausted. Then, I'll pull out a Curry 3Z for better support and use that. Those are the only two I bother with any more.

| Mezzo Forte User | I carry 3 in my case. Normal playing, bach 1.5B. Picc, Marcinkiewicz model 7. Bach 1.5C for a little brighter sound when needed. I usually have a honeymoon feeling with a new mp. I choose the new one because it does something specific the other doesnt, then realize it doesnt do the other things as well and go back...

| Forte User | I mostly use only one. I've had it since 1985. I switch for flugel and picc. I read in the ITG Journal that Vacchiano would switch alot...can/would anyone clarify that?

![]() | I only change for piccolo or cornet. I use the same configuration for everything else. An orchestral playing friend of mine (who plays a 1X variety) always has a Schilke 14A4A handy for the occasional pops or gospel show....just in case. |

![]() | I carry one mouthpiece but a bunch of sleeves. Usually trumpet players change mouthpieces because they need to change the resistance. By carrying different sleeves I adjust the gap....therefore the resistance. By keeping the rim and cup the same it has helped my consistancy. |
