Re: Mutes

Wilmer - you should try the EZ Bucket mutes - they're pretty happening.

Also the EZ Bucket for piccolo trumpet - perfect for situations where no matter how soft ya play it's always too loud. Let's you blow at a dynamic where you're comfy & can nail everything yet cuts down the sound tremendously.

Isn't the Humes and Berg mica mute supposed to be close?

Or take a H&B cup and trim off the scallops to make the rim of the cup even.

Re: Mutes

nah, that won't get you the same sound.

The distinct sound of a RR comes from the material the cone is made from (don't know what it is but it sure ain't "stone lined"), the wooden bottom of the cone, and the fuzz inside the cup.

I have a RR with no fuzz. It's close to the typical RR sound, but not exact.

Also, the distance from the lip of the cup to your bell is a big factor. I've seen a few RR's that have 3 little protrusions from the lip that are 1/4" long, which is the optimum distance to get a true "cup" mute sound.
