Art Tatum was the pianist that the other great pianists of that day called "God."

Here is more on Tatum.

Rgale has a spectacular aura about
I heard that some jazz pianist heard a recording of Tatum -never having heard him before- and said, "Who are those guys?"

It has been said that there is no best in music, that you can't say that Dizzy was better than Miles or something, and normally that would be right. Except for Tatum. He WAS the best!

I'll concur ONLY if you agree that the exception also applies to Buddy DeFranco,a former member of Count Basie Octet, and a Mastbaum grad.

Its not just the virtuosity which is incredible. Its the chords. Harmonically, he is far beyond bebop

Agreed ! Unfortunately and like most big band players, they (sidemen) never received the credit they duly deserve.
EDDIE is my home boy who I knew since his days at Brooklyn College.
I also knew he was going to grow into a giant after seeing him sit between Jerome Richardson and Pepper Adams at the Village Vanguard early 1966.
During that period I recall him playing the Tenor & Alto.
Eddie was also a hoopster and I wasn't surprised when he later penned a song titled "SLAM DUNK."
BTW,Jerome was a master craftsman/reedman.
