| Re: Not youtube but still great--Lee remembers clifford Beautiful. Not the most noticeable aspect, but how about Benny Golson's effortless tone production throughout? He sounds like a cello - no pushing, flawless intonation. The sound just floats. Quite a performance! |

Benny is one of the most under-rated musicians of all times. Has anyone read the new Lee Morgan bio? I can't wait to see how many things are screwed up Wilmer | |

| Re: Not youtube but still great--Lee remembers clifford Quote: Somehow I knew you were holding out on me,and that ain't right. Lee Morgan is too marvelous for words! Prior to Mr.Golson's departure, that band was known as "The Pennsylvania Messengers." The guy on the piano was a man I also considered a friend in music back in my NYC days of the '60s. He is also a BARRETT Junior High School graduate of South Philadelphia. Can you imagine the headache that class especially those who were members of the Barsity Band gave their teachers ? If one is to look for the description of "Blues and Funk" in the Schuylkill Dictionary of Jazz (1938 edition) they would find a picture of Mr.Timmons. In addition, when one looks up Avery 'Blues After Hours' Parrish, the dictionary says: "See Timmons." | |

| Re: Not youtube but still great--Lee remembers clifford [quote=wiseone2;288327]We all know that Benny Golson WROTE the tune, don't we? He also wrote Killer Joe and Along Came Betty. Benny is one of the most under-rated musicians of all times. Agreed ! It's amazing how little is said about his 1960's band "The Jazztet" that featured Art Farmer and a West Philadelphian (McCoy) on piano and/or his "Funky Quintet" with Nat Adderley. The locals here in Pittsburgh,Pa are now getting around to appreciate and present music by my man John Haley Sims a/k/a Zoot Sims. Has anyone read the new Lee Morgan bio? I can't wait to see how many things are screwed up After your initial post on the book,I ordered it from my local bookstore and didn't receive a call from them neither did I follow up with them to determine if it had arrived. Since none of your Philly friends including Reggie Workman were contacted, and Jackie McLean and Billy Higgins are now deceased,I wonder who are his pre-1963 sources ? Between Dec 1963 and June 1966,the man was too busy recording and enriching lives including the life of yours truly. Can't wait to get my hands on that book. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Not youtube but still great--Lee remembers clifford I played in the Tommy Monroe Big Band with Lee. We also played in Owen Marshall's band together. Ted Curson ever now and then played with those groups. Ted was also one of Lee's teachers. There are still guys in Philly who knew and loved that silly ........ Wilmer |
