NY Brass Conference

Well, it's over. It was really an memorable event.
Chris Botti was at the Dominic Derasse concert. Jerry Callet was there all day. Warren Vache made a very convincing argument for the cornet. Mac Gollehon exhibited the TCE approach to playing that was clear and quite powerful.Tim Ouimette's trumpet section demo showed how tight and yet loose a swinging trumpet section could be. Marv Stamm and his band were spectacular. Marvin is playing better these days than I have ever heard him play.
He was smoking. His ideas flowed seamlessly. Trumpet, Flugel, Marv sounded elegant.

Now we get to the George Washington segment. Thanks Eddie
I was there with the heavyweights. My dentist, Dr. Joseph D'Amore, and my long time friend, Dr. William Fielder.
I started the morning with the Gottfried Reiche "Ablassen." I followed that with the Bernstein "Rondo for Lifey," Ken Bowen was my accompanist. Kenny was the pianist on the WSS recording. Next came Jimmy Owens "Pieces of Thought." Now I addressed the question, "Can you play with a full set of dentures?" I spoke of my situation and how it was resolved. I spoke of the joy I feel in performance with aid of dentures.
I then opened the Q and A part of the session. It was lively to say the least Questions about dental adhesive, implants vs. dentures came up. Questions were raised about using dental means to achieve the upper register of our instrument. I stated that there was only one way for a player to achieve this end........hard work.
The discussion was informative.

I closed with the slow movement of the Haydn Concerto.

It was a day I will cherish. My friend, Jimmy Owens said that he was pleased with my performance of the fragment of his work.
I was very happy for the opportunity to make music for and with friends.
Wilmer

Hi Wilmer:

It was my pleasure to meet you and hear you play....you are a truly a class act.

How about Warren Vache's performance......when he played a tune everyone in the place temporarily forgot everything about leadpipes, bells and mouthpieces.....Just pure music.

Hey Wilmer...

I wasn't able to hear the beginning of your clinic, but heard most of the discussion and I enjoyed it very much! I've had my own problems with the mouth so it was nice to hear a clinic of that sort. But since then, I've thought of a question...

If someone has a major change to the teeth (dentures, accident, chipped, braces off, whatever) and struggled with basics (like attack and sound)when they began to play again, would you recommend changing the approach to the instrument, or sticking with what always worked and just sort of playing through the bad sounds and counting on your concept to eventually lead you back to good trumpet playing? I hope that made sense... Anyway, I'd love you hear your thoughts.

Nice Haydn, by the way. I liked the lively tempo!

Jason.

The only adjustment I made in my playing was straightening my left arm position. I had been tilting the horn to the right.
My internal tongue setting is the same as before the dentures, I tongue behind the top teeth. I am working on endurance, everything else is working fine.

Dentures etc

Wilmer,

Please share with us more info about the discussion of dentures, implants and the like. What adjustments do players with dentures need to make? Is it at all possible to play as well post- denture as oposed to pre-denture?

Thanks.

I have a full set of dentures. I thought my playing days were over, but with the aid of these dentures I can play. I have practiced diligently for the past 4 months. Getting back into playing shape has been my goal, I am very happy with my progress.
I have not made any major changes in my playing. I have only made an adjustment on my left hand grip, I was angling to the right ala Phil Smith.
For some reason it does not feel right anymore.
I think I can regain ALL my former powers.
Wilmer

So then to be sure I understand you,
1. you recently went to dentures and
2. they do not slip?

This is encouraging news. Thanks again.

My dentures fit perfectly, they do not slip. I have never been a muscle player.
