Once in a lifetime

I went to Town Hall yesterday to hear some old friends and I was privileged to hear the performance of the "Quatuor pour la fin du temps," done by Tashi that I will remember forever.
Every musical chance they took worked. Richard Stoltzman's pianissimo playing was as close to perfection as it gets. The quartet of players were: Peter Serkin, Ida Kavafian, Fred Sherry and Richard Stoltzman are friends from The Marlboro Festival. They were magnificent. It was a once in a lifetime event.

Meeting Marian Anderson at Jimmy DePriest's house in South Philadelphia has always been a special life changing event in my life. Playing for Casals was unforgettable. Working with Lenny, meeting Diz and the others greats has been humbling.

I could go on for days about my blessings, please tell me yours.

Wilmer

Re: Once in a lifetime

Because of the college I went to, I got to have some amazing experiences with world class musicians.
Master classes with :
Barry Harris
Lee Konitz
Charles McPherson,
Jerry Bergonzi
Oscar Peterson
Vince Mendoza
Bill Holman
Dave Douglas

As well as performing with
Randy Brecker
Michael Brecker
Dave Holland
Rob McConnell
Ranee Lee
and other local legends.

To me, some of the most memorable times were just when I could sit and listen to the legends talk about their lives.

Thanks for sharing O Wise One
First,I apologize for DAR's actions against Ms.Marian Anderson.
Secondly,I was blessed to have met most Jazz musicians from the late '50s period and the first time and place I met DIZZY is forever etched in my memory.

Other non-musicians (excluding all the hoopsters) of note that made a great contribution to this Nation and the World that I had the pleasure in meeting are:
Gen.Andrew Goodpaster
Charles Poor Kindleberger,NYC
Harry Rositzke and Joe Califano of Brooklyn,NY.

I knew the Wise One was a hard task master and I'm delighted to read that he made an impression on you (and many others) as opposed to some people who leave impressions not so lasting as the imprint of an oar upon the water.

Long Live Wilmer !

Honestly, I can't even remember hearing about Maynard playing in Ontario since I have been interested in jazz. Although my friend was going to join his band on split lead but unfortunately Maynard passed before he was to go on tour.

I'm a junior in HS in the Chicago area, and so far my greatest musical moment was this weekend when my HS played at SuperState. (for those who don't know, SuperState is basically the state competition for Illinois HS bands - top 10 compete, best in show gets to come back next year as the "honor band")

We played the following:
Molly on the Shore - P. Grainger
Salvation is Created - (the name escapes me)
Finale from Symphony #4 - P.I. Tchaikovsky

None of the pieces were perfect. (Everyone makes performance flaws)

We did great, though. Played at Kranert Center for the Performing Arts' Foellinger Auditorium @ U of I. Acoustically perfect, and really fun to play in!

We didn't make the honor band, but we played pretty much the greatest concert of any of our lives. Our director got off the stage in tears, everyone was happy about it on the bus ride home (even though we didn't win). The greatest musical day of my life. (so far)

Peace

I can live with your explanation and I've always wondered since April 1995 how an American named Tony Kadleck found a seat in the trumpet section of the Canadian Brass Jazz All-Stars.
You cats up North need to protect your border from trumpet players who call the mainland of these U.S. of A. their home.

Are you familiar and/or worked with any of these cats from Rob McConnell's band -
Arnie Chycoski,Steve McDade,John MacLeod,Guido Basso,Dave Woods,Dave Dunlop,
Kevin Turcotte,Erich Traugott ?

Congratulations, keep your chin up,walk tall and continue on tooting your horn.
Be proud of your efforts and contrary to what Vince Lombardi said during his days in Green Bay,WI. Winning isn't everything when it comes to music.
As a matter of fact, music is not a track meet and should never be associated with any sporting event.
As you recess for your summer break,I implore you to take a listen to some "Trumpeter's Heritage" recordings available at Welcome to Four Winds Entertainment and listen to cats like George Vosburgh and if you practice hard (2 + hours daily),come FALL you would be the BMOC during your Senior year.

Arrivederci
