westview1900 is an unknown quantity at this point
Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a medium sized city, but its residents historically have overrepresented the ranks of successful musicians. Have you ever given any thought to this, Mr. Wise, and if so, could this trait be transferred to other areas of this country?

I'm not Mr.Wise neither am I as wise as our host.
However,on the aggregrate and from a Jazz perspective,I know of no City other than Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that produced more talented and 'top-shelf' players.

As a native Brooklyner, please do not confuse NYC with those of us who were born and raised in Kings County. Further, except for those who hailed from Brooklyn and Upstate NY,most of talented players (Boppers) were out-of-towners who moved to NYC to showcase their talent, and where music was an integral part of our culture.

Per capita and from my life long experience, one cannot exclude Philadelphia without listing names and states of players.
On a closing note,my musical aspirations were shattered during the mid '50s when I heard a recording of Buddy DeFranco,a native of New-Joisey who was musically educated at Mastbaum.
Perhaps a listing of those who attended Mastbaum,Bok and Curtis can best answer your question.

Success has a thousand fathers, failure is an orphan!
The cats at the Water Works believe it's the water while others point to Joe Ostrow and his successors.

As President Obama said last evening: "Don't mess with Joe." :)

There were so many guys. Would you believe Sherman Hemsley was in our high school orchestra, he played trombone. Philadelphia water was THE worst water in the world.
You could see the fluoride in the water. The hoagies are the secret.

Correct me if I'm wrong but during those hazy and lazy days of summer, didn't the
ITALIAN ICE help simmer the situation before Joe & Frank Rizzo arrivd on the scene ?
