bachstrad72 has a spectacular aura about
Philadelphia Pines of Rome

Hey Wilmer,
I have the Ormandy recording of Pines with Philly. It is on one of those RCA Victor releases that doesn't say when the recording was originally released and I was wondering if you might know who was in the trumpet section. The offstage solo is wonderful as is the following statement by the trombones, really the whole recording is lovely. Any ideas on the year and who might be in the section?
Thanks a million!
p

The switch from Columbia Records to RCA happened in the late sixties when Gil Johnson was still there. I would bet on Rosenfeld, McComas and Krauss.

Thanks so much, Wilmer! It's really nice to have a "scorecard" on who is playing on what. Mr. Johnson's sense of line is something I strive for everyday.

You're too young to remember sitting around listening to ping-pong balls going from the right channel speaker to the left channel speaker.
Listening to Sports Car races were big deals............"Did you hear that Porsche go by? Placement was a big deal in the early stereo days.

Oh, absolutely. My first copy of the Gabrielli was on vinyl though, and I used to take the speakers and put them on opposite sides of the room, blast the system and follow a score. I still enjoy doing that!

The "Wise One" said: The switch from Columbia Records to RCA happened in the late sixties when Gil Johnson was still there. I would bet on Rosenfeld, McComas and Krauss.

In addition to Pines with Philly,I have Mendelssohn ELIJAH by RCA (a 3 vinly LP set ) and the recording date is also absent.
Moreover, although there are about 40+ members in the Philly orchestra, the only names listed on the notes other than Mr.Ormandy and the producer, Mr.John Pfeiffer are the singers : Tom Krause,Jane Marsh,Shirley Verrett, Richard Lewis, and the 'Singing City Choirs' and the Columbia Boychoir of Princetown,New Joisey.
In jazz, this style of presenting liner notes would NEVER be accepted.

In parting,it should be noted that the Columbus Choir was the 1st youth group to represent the United States abroad under President Eisenhower's International Program for Cultural Presentations.
I wish those days never ended !
