The POP side of Freddie.

Today, while watching the NFL games, among others,I was listening to Mr.Hubbard and his take of 'Wichita Lineman' from his 1969 recording "A Soul Experiment" that left me in a joyful and soulful mood.
His articulation was impeccable and in my humble opinion exceeded most who orally recite Shakespear.

In his long and rich career,Freddie has carved himself a comfortable and permanent place in Jazzdom's hall of fame.

Long Live BOP and the Boppers.
KJ

Witchita co. lineman is a fantastic pop tune!

That's the Freddie I first saw circa 1964 at the Village Gate when he mesmerize the listening audience including yours truly.

It's very hard for me to separate Freddie from Lee or vice versa as I love them both and it was those two young lions who after my initial live 1961 introduction to Dizzy and CT at Carnegie Hall made be a sucker for the sounds of the trumpet .

I understand that empty feeling.
When I left the Army in 3/1971,I returned home to Brooklyn,NY and was getting back into the swing of things in my old stumping grounds (West Village) and one morning I awoke to my favorite radio station (WRVR) and heard Les Davis announce the tragic passing of Lee Morgan,on the East Side
of town.

When I first got serious about playing (ninth grade) and was newly introduced to jazz, my Mother (who knew nothing about jazz) happened to see a Freddie Hubbard album as the monthly selection at the Columbia Record Club and bought it for me. The album remains one of my favorites to this day...it's on CTI and it's called 'First Light'. It has a core group of Freddie, George Benson, Hubert Laws, Richard Wyands, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette, along with strings arranged by Sebesky. One of the tunes is 'Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey'. =
The playing on this thing just BURNS though! Freddie is probably my favorite trumpet player and I always recommend this record to people. Check it out.

Ah yeah, you caught me sleeping at the switch.
It's akin to being a sentry at Ft.Knox and allowing outside forces move the gold bars uncontested.

Dat Dere is indeed a nice recording with some wicked licks.
