Question for Wiseone

Hi Wilmer,
I was intrigued by your thread “Double high C who needs it”
I’ve been playing for less than 4 years and on a good day my usable range is G just above the staff.
I have some DVD’s of great players such as Arturo, Maynard, and Cat Anderson playing high. How high I haven’t a clue, however not as high as a clip I saw of Doc Severinsen playing some very high notes for Letterman. Now Doc is a great player however the notes he played on that clip was just noise to my ear.
As I said I was intrigued by your thread so I decided to use Finale note pad to get an idea of what a DH C sounded like.
I set the sheet up for Bb trumpet and started with a C below the staff semibreve and continued the C major scale on up.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to hear what a DH C sounded like in finale as the software only allowed me to go up to High G (The G above High C)
Do you think that the people who wrote the software assumed that this was the extremity of the musical range for Bb trumpet?

Chris Brown.

Re: Question for Wiseone

I never used Finale, but in Cakewalk there's a limit to how many ledger lines it'll display in staff view.

Re: Question for Wiseone

Mr. Wise has forgot more about playing the trumpet than many of us could imagine to learn in a lifetime.

I feel fortunate to read his thoughts.

Thanks Mr. Wise.

Re: Question for Wiseone

Having used Finale a bit I think there are two reasons for this. First, once you get too many ledger lines above or below the staff you begin to interfere with the staves above or below the staff currently being played.

Second, for the player, it can get difficult to read that many ledger lines! It is much simpler for everyone just to write the part down (or up) the octave and use an 8va or 8vb notation.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: Question for Wiseone

I know from past experience with Finale that when I copy notes from a midi to a sheet set up for trumpet Finale moves the notes up.
So I loaded a midi of “Get smart” copied the track that had the trumpet melody (which had high F as the highest note)
I set the first copy sheet for choir – voice and the notes copied over the same.
However when I copied the notes over to a sheet set for Brass – Bb trumpet, the notes were transposed an octave higher (highest note double high F)
So I can now hear for myself a trumpet DH C played in Finale.
One observation the double high F is almost inaudible to my 58yr old ears!
Do you think that people who like the ultra high notes are ‘Dog Eared?’
