Bernstein was a genius. The others were good too, but you can't beat Bernstein.

Re: Ravel

Thanks Wilmer I love the Martha Argerich's interpretation...but the orchestra sounds better with Celibidache and Bernstein...Which orchestra plays under Celibidache? is it Munich Phil?

Re: Ravel

I found that... it is LSO and the trumpeter is....Maurice Murphy? Not surprising that he sounds so well... YouTube - Michelangeli - Ravel Piano Concerto - [1] Allegramente with a B flat...I have trouble to get it right on the C....very nice

JM, beat him? I'd like to just keep up with him. Presto? Where's the FIRE? At the end of his finger tips that's where!

My vote is with Martha Argerich's playing. Very expressive.
Strong, yet gentle.

Maurice's playing is wonderful. And who says the C trumpet is THE orchestral horn? Stop and imagine all our repertoire being played on the Bb.

Thanks for posting these Wilmer. Youtube is great isn't it?

Re: Ravel

Youtube.com is a fantastic reference for our young people to get a chance to enjoy what used to be just an excerpt as a whole piece. Comparisons, tempi, styles... all for the price of whatever it costs to be hooked up to the 'net.

No doubt about that.
Young People's Concert is what perked my interest in 'serious' music.
With that said,I give thanks to Buddy DeFranco for making me choose a different career path.

Music is indeed the food of love...play on cats and dolls.

I am not saying that C trumpet is THE orchestral horn but one of them...Maurice was doing well enough without the C so is Rod Franks...but I am not as good as they are, so I need the C trumpet to help myself a bit and get another type of sound...Manny is playing C trumpet on few orchestral pieces so I think that if I do should be alright too...

Re: Ravel

The key of the instrument played is still the choice of player. My first encounter with the Ravel was many, many years ago. I played the part on a Bb trumpet, I played it perfectly. I would not choose to play it today on that horn.
