Congratulations Purchase College Jazz Professor Ray Vega Receives Bobby Capo Lifetime Achievement Award Date: September 28, 2007 Written By: Roxana Hadadi Contrary to popular belief, sometimes nice guys don’t finish last—see Purchase College jazz professor Ray Vega as an example. Vega, an acclaimed trumpeter, received the 2007 Bobby Capo Lifetime Achievement Award Sept. 6. Created in 1997 by the Battery Park City Authority, the Bobby Capo Lifetime Achievement Award is meant to both celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and honor Hispanic Americans within New York who have distinguished themselves in the areas of arts and public service. Capo, the Puerto-Rican artist whom the award is named after, worked for both the office of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for the City of New York and the office of the State Department of Probation. Vega, a Bronx native, received the award this year for his contributions to the Purchase College School of the Arts, Conservatory of Music and the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra. Aside from teaching, Vega is a multi-talented trumpeter, percussionist, composer and arranger who has performed with Mongo Santamaria, Mario Bauza’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Ray Barretto and the New World Spirit. He has also joined the Tito Puente Orchestra as lead trumpeter, and was the last lead trumpeter of that legendary ensemble
