![]() | Rolf Liebermann Concerto for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra. Wilmer, did you ever play the Liebermann Concerto for Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra? As I type this, I dug out my old Chicago Symphony recording under Fritz Reiner and the CSO done with the Sauter-Finegan Band back in December of 1954. Bud Herseth really shows his dance band chops in this one! For those who thought Reiner was was not interested in contemporary music, this piece was also played at subscription concerts in November of that year. Reiner also had hoped to record Gershwin and Grofe' works with the CSO, but RCA nixed the idea. That music was the Boston Pops realm and RCA did not want the same pieces done by both orchestras. For those who never heard of this Liebermann piece, it is a five movement work based on a twelve tone row and is really fun to listen to. The last movement is a rockin' mambo! The record is extremely difficult to find, but is available along with other remarkable CSO recordings at the Chicago Symphony store in a somewhat expensive CD collection. It is worth the money, though. Regards, Rich Tomasek |

This group included Ed Carroll and Wynton Marsalis. Wynton was 18 years old at that time. We played this piece in Mexico City. Wilmer
