rubbing alcohol

Wilmer,

I thought you'd be the cat to ask this so here it goes....

I played a big band gig the other night with a band that has been doing regular shows at a members only club (it's kind of like a country club but w/o the golf course)

The lead trumpet player is an older cat.... like late 70's, still can scream some killer high G's and A's. During the set break, he reached into his mute bag and pulled out some rubbing alcohol and rubbed it on his lips. He said it makes his chops feel good and he doesn't get fatigued as quickly. He said cats have been doing it for years. Have you ever heard of this type of thing? My though is that the alcohol dries out your skin, therefore shrinking the muscle tissue. I've played some jobs with guys of a wide age range and have never heard of it. Thoughts?

Re: rubbing alcohol

I have a friend who keeps a bottle of rubbing alcohol in his case. He always cleans the rim and cup of his mouthpiece before he plays. It is almost a compulsive habit.

Re: rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is used quite often in sports medicine to help relieve muscle strains. The quick evaporating action cause a cooling sensation. Our cross country coach in High School swore by the stuff. However, I have never heard of anyone putting it on there lips for any reason! The cooling action, I assume, would feel great... but Isopropyl has the unfortunate repercusion of over drying the skin, it displaces water, and I can't imagine that is conducive to trumpet playing!

Re: rubbing alcohol

You could get that cooling effect from a non-sweet menthol-based lip balm like Bert's Bees. Without the drying effect. I wonder if lubed lips would give a similar flexibility increase to playing "wet"...

Although I'm laughing my ass off,the above is a damn fact.
Even the boys at the Bowery or those around W.Houston Street,NYC didn't moisten their lips before attempting to clean one's windshield as one stopped at the red lights enroute to an evening of BEBOP.

I hope the poster from Cleveland,Ohio is listening to trumpet recordings by its native son,
Benny Bailey.

Re: rubbing alcohol

I always believed drinking Bourbon (with ice) cured my swollen lips. Come to think of it it cured a lot of other problems.
