Shostakovich!

You HAVE to hear these two versions of the Piano Concerto!

YouTube - RARE: Young Shostakovich Playing end of op.35 (1934?)
YouTube - Shostakovich - Concerto for Piano, Trumpet & Strings Op.35

Re: Shostakovich!

Incredible. I have never seen video of Shostakovich playing. That is some serious tonguing for the trumpet players.

I think Shostakovich's string quartet no 8 in C minor is one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces ever written.

Re: Shostakovich!

I was refering to the second clip. The one that does not have Shostakovich playing the piano part.

Re: Shostakovich!

Those Russians are no wimps - they even use Bb trumpets! (probably not ones built in Russia though!)

Re: Shostakovich!

In the first clip the trumpeter is sitting right behind DS. And no plastic shield! Imagine that... Today, the pianist would be suing... (a horn player friend of mine was actually sued because he played to loud on Shosty 10 and someone damaged their eardrums. Isn't that the point?)
