![]() ![]() ![]() | The Soloffs I have known Laura Soloff for quite a while, but I had never heard her play. This afternoon at her recital, she's a violinist, I heard Laura AND Lew play together. They were marvelous! Lew came up after she had played the formal part of the concert. The encore was a work that employed improvised sections. There was a bassist, who's name I can't recall, who played with a virtuoso flair with Laura and Lew. The concert was part of Laura's graduation requirements. Laura's mom, a fantastic harp player, was also on the concert. What did Sly Stone sing? "It's a Family Affair!" Wilmer |

| Re: The Soloffs Must be hard to play in the shadow of her father! Congrats to her - and her father for supporting her! And here's to growing up on Lew's BS&T solo way back - wore out a lot of vinyl playing that one over and over..... |

| Re: The Soloffs it;s funny I have met players who are anti Lew Soloff referring to him as "Lew solo" but he is a great "trumpet" player and underrated by some perhaps due to his stint with BS&T but hey to lead the Gil Evans orchestra and play such strong (great) solo's whilst players like Hannibal are sitting next to you let alone George Adams, Arthur Blythe, Pete Levin, David Sanborn & Ernie Royal all wanting to say their thing is a testament to how the players around him held and hold him in regard. My memory of Lew aside from recordings is the Gil Evans Orchestra in London 1988. Gil had past and the concert was so charged with respect and desire to live up to the great mans music. When the band opened it was like they had withheld their mourning until this very moment. Love respect, desire and raw emotion poured out of every player. George Adams was a monster but Lew not only lead the band from his chair he set the hall on fire with his solo's including 4 choruses on Gil's arrangement of Moondance where for the first three choruses it seemed like he only played off beats in an ascending manner followed by a blaze of 16ths for the whole 4th chorus it was electrifying. |

Had Randy Brecker not split the band (BS&T),I wonder what 'they' talk would have said about Lew who was honing his skills in the Catskills. I shudder to read what 'they' may have to say about Chuck Mangione who by the way was a "JAZZ MESSENGER" and who led an outstanding Be-Bop Quartet during the early 70's before he began to follow the money. Further,I know cats who were dyed-in-the-wool Buck Clayton fans and who later criticitized him for his (stellar) contribution with ODETTA (and The Blues). The same ill conceived rational and out of hand rebuke was applied to Phil Woods who added that melodic sound to Billy Joel's late 1970's recordings. |

Sorry I missed that cover but you should have heard Mr.James Moody medley of comedy and be-bop at the Guild on Saturday,September 29,2007 when he told a story about a ZEBRA who upon arrival at the Pearly Gates questioned St.Peter as to whether he was white or black. The rest of the story left the full house (approx 350) | |

| Re: The Soloffs Hey Joe / Wilmer On the money We do the best we can and sometimes it is for commercial performers sometime for art, sometimes for neither but commercial is not necessarily bad but it is easy to slander. It seems when people read your CV and they do not know you, they only see the commercial names. If they asked you I bet the real highlights of our performing careers would be a very different list than they like to pick and question. The only thing Phil Woods did incorrect for Billy Joel was not knowing he was about to frame the hook for Billy's biggest hit and negotiating a composers split. But rumours suggest he was not fully aware of what he was recording on, but perhaps someone here really knows the truth. |

But rumours suggest he was not fully aware of what he was recording on, but perhaps someone here really knows the truth. In 1976,I relocated from NYC to the Atlanta,Ga area and a year later while sitting at the bar owned by Burt Reynolds located in the Omni,I recognized that alto sound among much background noises and waged a few dollars to those who were Be-Bop challenged. To the best of my memory and from reliable sources, the producer of THE STRANGER (Phil Ramone) wasn't pleased with the horn sound he got from Billy's band member so he did a Smokey Robinson routine and 'Shop Around' for a ligit and authentic alto player and up jumped Phil. The rest they say is history. On an unrelated matter,Tito Puente was always happy when he receivd his royalty checks and gave thanks to DJ's who played 'Oye Como Va' and gave credit to Carlos Santana. I'm sure Ben Tucker is as happy as Tito when 'Comin' Home Baby' is played and Ben's name is not mentioned. |
