I remember Lee Morgan once telling me he advised Art Blakey to hire John Gilmore for his planned overseas tour (circa 1964) and how Art returned upset and annoyed with the direction that Mr.Gilmore was attempting to take the band. Needless to say, that was Mr.Gilmore's 'last stand' as a JAZZ MESSENGER.

| Fortissimo User | Wilmer, thank you for the links (you've turned into quite the "YOUTUBE" monster!) That music was................interesting. (There was this one night about 1970 or 71 ... just after Woodstock...in the university dorm when "smoke hang heavy in the air", someone had turned on their stereo which was hooked up to a couple of light boxes.. and these big old, coloured blobs kept floating around the ceiling!.........Talk about your average "flashback"!) |

![]() | Sun Ra was a true genius, and he had some killer players in his various Arkestras. I saw him a number of times throughout the 80s and 90s -- always a hugely inspiring show. A brilliant writer and arranger too. Hobart Dotson sounds great on those early recordings... can you tell us some more about him? |

![]() | Hobart Dotson also played with Mingus and Gerald Wilson, if I'm not mistaken. Michael McLaughlin "Basically my wife was immature. I'd be at home in the bath and she'd come in and sink my boats." Woody Allen

![]() | Hobart Dotson Check out this list of players he worked with http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Artis...on/hd-pers.htm Wilmer[/quote] I've never seen Mr.Dotson performed but having just reviewed his Resume',I can't believe I missed him during his 1964 performances with JIMMY OWENS. If my memory is correct,I recall 1st seeing Jimmy at either the Jazz Gallery or the Ski Lodge in NYC . In reviewing the list,I observed Cecil Payne's name - is he still with us ? Mr.Payne resided around the corner from Kenny Dorham on President Street by Albany Avenue,Brooklyn.
