Two Big Band Videos

Here's the Count Basie Band at it's most swinging time-Snooky playing lead.
Hamp always had a swinging band. Along with Eddie Williams and Art Hoyle, was Moon Mullins and Dave Gonzales in the trumpet section.
My Club Harlem band buddy Zack Zachery is burning on alto.

There's only one word for that stuff...

greatgooglymoogly!!!

Man...great players and tunes just transcend time. That stuff is smokin'. There are threads all over about "what is a commercial sound"..."how do you play lead"..."jazz"..."swing".... etc... This is all a clinic. Crazy drummin', great solos (you are right about the alto player...geesh!). Showmanship... you name it.. it's there.

btw...did I notice someone who recently left us playing really "high" tpt on that Lionel video? He wasn't playing mf (wink)...but MF!

What a treat to still have these things. Made my day....
Thank you, sir!

Dave Gonzales in those days looked a lot like MF.
Dave was a screamer!

Well, grainy video and there were no close ups of the back section. No matter. Great stuff.

camelbrass will become famous soon enough
Absolutely outstanding. What a sound and boy do they swing.

I was lucky enough to see them live in Sydney in about '68/69 (I was 12!!). My Dad played tenor and took me along to see Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis.

Regards,

Trevor

Thanks Wilmer! Anyone who is serious about being a lead trumpet player should get their hands on everything Snooky ever played.

Wow Wilmer, those are awesome, there are a lot of great vids on Youtube and other sites as well. I definitely agree if anyone wants to be a real lead player, they need to listen to Snooky. My old jazz director in my undergrad was Brad Leali (alto sax) and played with the Basie Band for several years. He has some great stories and vids and sound stuff. Maybe I can get some of that for y'all.

Special memories from a Wonderful Life !
Thaddeus Joseph Jones is indeed a joy to watch play !
In addition,I'm always happy to see the old timers continue to perform without missing a beat.
Frank Wess was in the 'Burgh as recently as October 1,2006 and apart from him walking with a cane,he continues to swing and almost burned down the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild.
