West Side Story Links

A friend sent these YouTube links from the WSS video. The trumpets aren't shown, but you can hear that weird lick in "Somethings Coming." The fellow who announces the break for the orchestra is Sam Levitan. He was a hero. Even when he was told NOT to hire me, he did. He was a very brave man.

Wilmer,

Because of what I've read on TM, I bought the DVD. I've watched it several times. I enjoy it each time. Wonderful playing.

Regards,

Richard Oliver

Re: West Side Story Links

Wow. I just watched the Maria clip 3 times, the other one twice. The interactions and frustrations betweeen Bernstein and Carrerras are excruciating to watch, but ultimately what sublime performance results.

This looks like the "heat of the battle".

Verrry interesting to see the rehearsal behaviour of LB. Were your experiences with him congenial or did you suffer any of his wrath or displeasure? I thought he was going to burst an artery when he upbraided the guys in the recording booth about the clarinet part, etc.

I wonder if the union clock ticking expensively, i.e., production costs, were a major factor in his demeanor, or was he always that way?

Also, it looked like it might have been difficult to follow his conducting style.

Also, "Take 135" or something like that order of magnitude. . . The final recording must have been an engineering headache if not a miracle.

I've gotta find this DVD. What compelling drama!

Thank you for linking this, Wilmer. I'm still shaking.

Same here! Its about time for me to watch it again. I love it when Bernstein refers to his "genius first trumpet player"!

Wow - those are amazing clips. Thanks Wilmer! Do you recall which studio that was? I'll have to try to find the entire DVD as well.

Re: West Side Story Links

WSS was recorded at the RCA studio on 44th St.
The I.R.S. has the building now Lots of great OCR's were done in that studio.

Wow,

This was just magic to see; thanks for posting Wilmer!

It's a neat look into the world that you and other pros see; that I do not.

Re: West Side Story Links

Agree with all the comments here. Genius first trumpet is so very true.

With that, I can speak first hand about the guy playing second and picc trumpet on that WWS recording, Phil Ruecktenwald. Having studied with Phil for several years in the 90s I can tell you that he was not only a monster player, with amazing technique and tone but more importantly he was an amazing person. Down to earth and would go to all extremes to help you.

Re: West Side Story Links

Great clips!! I saw this programme on BBC4 recently (over christmas i think), was really interesting to see how something like that is put together, with all the frustrations and pressures that go with it!!
