Where's the tune?

I spent quite a bit of time trying out horns yesterday. I could not help but notice the lack of music in the room. I mean excerpts and the like, or ballads.
Melody was absent, instead I heard player after player blasting high noises.
It was deafening. I heard only a few fellows playing quietly. My hat's off to the poor exhibitors who braved eight hours of MF wannabes.

Wilmer -

I agree. It was a total mess. Chuck Findley was saying the same thing.

Remember when players actually checked things like sound & pitch on a trumpet? I'm dating myself, I guess.

Too bad - there were some great horns there.

Re: Where's the tune?

We all know the best way to see if a horn is good is to play a minimum of 50
double C's on it. No less though because you want to make sure a horn is good before you buy it.

Re: Where's the tune?

Ya that's sad. Probably that's close to how they practice too!

People might remember my "tally sheet" at the Eclipse booth at the 06' ITG.

Re: Where's the tune?

That's the primary reason I don't go to trumpet events. I would love to try out some new horns, but I really value my practice time - and my hearing.

Dealers - I'm curious as to how many of the screeching maniacs actually buy horns. Is it worth scaring away serious players by letting them hog the horns?

Would it be possible to snatch horns away at the first sounds of ffff or screech notes? A couple of bouncers maybe, to keep it under control? Those folks could be escorted to a soundproof room, and they could all make themselves deaf- without bothering the rest of us.

Just a thought.....

Re: Where's the tune?

At the Yamaha Trumpet Day in NYC a couple of weeks ago (Wilmer was there), Yamaha actually asked a couple of guys to stop the ffff cc's because it was bothering everyone in the room. I think that's quite approriate and if someone needs to hear that volume, they should go to an isolated room.

It really drives some people away from the big trumpet events. The exhibitor's who have to stay in the rooms all day go home at night with splitting headaches and their ears ringing.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone at these events started by playing Misty, then some Clarke Studies, and then Haydn, etc. to see how the horn sounds and responds? Maybe I'm in Fantasy Land.

Re: Where's the tune?

I think that I'd rather be in fantasy land than have to listen to the trumpet be used non-musically like that. Outside of guitar players, who does this? Maybe a sign requesting that the trumpets be used for musical purposes only would be helpful.

Re: Where's the tune?

When I try out a horn at these conferances I first start by playing them softly and checking out the horns pitch. After I do that I will play music on the horn that I am asked to play on my gigs to see if I can get the expression on the horns which I am looking for. If I can't get it to speak the way I hear it in my head I move on. It only takes about five notes to know that it is time to put the horn back on the table.

The odd thing I find is that I get many strange looks from guys at conferances when I try to play something musical......God forbid you play a ballad.....you could end up in a fist fight. They give me the "why don't you just go play those tunes at home". After a while I usually feel a bit uncomfortable and just stop playing all together.

At the last Trumpet Friday, some guy pulled at some Aeborsold Play alongs and guys were sitting in and jamming. They should have a room just for that guy........that made sense, except not in a room full of 100 players testing horns.
