| Why did Pops switch to trumpet? What made Louis Armstrong switch from cornet to trumpet? |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Why did Pops switch to trumpet? I believe I read that answer had something to do with the "invention" of recording (abeit rather primitive) and the need for the soloist to be heard. A trumpet projected much better than a cornet; even the cornet with the C-cup mouthpiece which the trumpet effectively replaced at the time. I'm sure someone can chime in and provide the right reference however. EDIT: OOPS! Sorry, Wilmer. I failed to see that this was in your forum. Last edited by Tootsall : 05-04-2007 at 04:43 PM. |

| Re: Why did Pops switch to trumpet? Probably to match with the other players. Pop's NY Times onituary sez: Moving back to Chicago in 1925, Mr. Armstrong again played at the Dreamland Cafe, where his wife, Lil, had her own band, and with Erskine Tate's "symphonic jazz" orchestra at the Vendome Theater. It was at that point that he gave up the cornet for the trumpet. http://www.nytimes.com/books/97/08/0...rong-obit.html |
