Woody Shaw

I was very happy to see the that in some people's minds, WS is still "alive and well." Although the interview is dated for us "old folks" (which Woody used to play,) it was still a pleasure to hear his voice again.

Back in the day (78-84) I was fortunate to hear Shaw many times at the Village vanguard, and other venues, during the 20 years that i lived in NYC. I was privleged to know him also.

Although the overwhelming majority of what was played was original material, Shaw always started each set with a standard and used it as warm up, as it were. he might play two choureses with nothing but long notes connecting the harmonic structure of the tune and by the end of his solo he would be playing in a manner of what lay ahead.

A wonderful learning experience when I was young.
