Yesterday in Philadelphia

The Jerome Ashby Memorial concert at Curtis Institute was thrilling. Horn players from the Philadelphia Orchestra, and New York freelance players honored Jerry with spectacular playing. It was a touching and thrilling display given by the horn community.
Jerry was loved by his students at Curtis, and his colleagues Of the horn community.

Jimmy Owens took the ride to Philadelphia for me. I showed to jimmy around my part of town, South Philadelphia. My how the city has changed.
Pep's was still there, but hidden behind a brick wall. The Showboat was unrecognizable. Further down Broad Street, the Musicians union building had been demolished.
The city has changed.

Re: Yesterday in Philadelphia

Wilmer, i'm just wondering, have you played, or been to any concerts at Peabody At Hopkins? Sounds like you had a good time at Curtis.

I haven't been to Baltimore since 1970, maybe one of these days I will get back there.

godchaser can only hope to improve
Re: Yesterday in Philadelphia

.

It's the same, and worse. -Although, you wouldn't recognize the many pockets of development, and forward change.

crazyhorns is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Yesterday in Philadelphia

Wilmer,
Where was Pep's? Broad and South?
On WRTI, Bob Perkins mentioned addresses of a few of the old clubs, but I was driving (to 3rd and Spring Garden) at the time - so I couldn't jot them down.
Being a South Jersey/ Philly area player, it's great to hear you talk about your Philly times.

Re: Yesterday in Philadelphia

Pep's was on the NW corner of Broad and South Street. The main entrance was on Broad Street, but there was an entrance on South Street for their small bar. You could hear the band just as well there......and you didn't have to pay the high cover and minimum charge. That was the musicians hang.
