Re: Andrea Giuffredi

Sergei Nakariakov uses his pedals on the flugelhorn to play cello and bassoon concertos - pretty amazing stuff too!

Hi Ed-

I've been silently watching the forum for a long while now--and I just have to say that those pedals are awesome----

-they are so centered and full of distinction. I love good pedals. How do you recommend developing a facile pedal register?

- Thanks for pointing out Giuffredi too. This is my first listen to his playing-and it seems he has a lot of control over the horn(varying tone, articulation, style--good stuff!!).

Thanks again, and talk to you soon
-chris

Re: Andrea Giuffredi

I did an interview with Andrea (it's on his and my website) where he says about the pedal tones:

Q : It seems you developed your pedal register very well, is there a special reason for it (part of method) or is it just one of the tools to express yourself. Do you play the pedals on flugelhorn more easily?

A : I began doing pedal notes on my own, already at the conservatory's times, I liked to do them and so developed more and more, but they were and still are useful for practice, to soften the lips. Yes, with the flugelhorn they sound better, I use a four-valves one and really sounds like e trombone!

Re: Andrea Giuffredi

Erik,

Goede middag.

Andrea and I were both at Festival Fiati in Novara this Spring. He's very, very good (the Camp excerpt that I posted knocks me out). Thanks for your Q & A.

Chris,

Nice to "see" you here.

Sergei Nakariakov (good website if you haven't seen it http://www.nakariakov.com ) was asked at the University of Louisville a few years back what matierials he plays to develop his triple tongue. His momentarily confused but actually very enlightened answer was "I play music that has triplets in it".

That said, I suppose the Stamp book is as good as anything as most of us have it. Work on blowing faster and wider in the low to pedal range, not just washing your middle register out or bending down. The notes will come with greater authority over time and your high range will benefit as well.

Cheers,
EC

Re: Andrea Giuffredi

Andrea mailed me the sheetmusic of Afterthoughts but is impossible for me to play this piece!

I can recommend his cd's btw. There's a lot of hard work in those 2 albums and it paid of.

Re: Andrea Giuffredi

Thank you for posting the U tube. This further reinforces my vow to never miss an ITG conference. I did not attend the Denver conference (2004) where Andrea performed.

Thank you again for posting.
