(Another) New Hardenberger Release

Seems to be a common theme with my threads, doesn't it?

Hakan has released yet another CD, this one of trumpet solo works. It includes HK Gruber's "Exposed Throat," which I'm sure many of us have been waiting patiently for. It appears to have only been released in Europe so far (thank god for amazon.de) so the shipping is a little pricy, but well worth it. It's out on BIS and has some other interesting stuff on it including Daniel Börtz' "Painting," Rogin Holloway's "Sonata for solo trumpet," and Robert Henderson's "Variation Movements." My copy is in the mail and hopefully I write something of a tasteful and purely educatoinal (i.e. non-critical) review of the CD after it arrives. It can be ordered here:

http://www.amazon.de/Exposed-Throat-...e=UTF8&s=music.

I'd recommend ordering from one of the sellers as they generally have it in stock as opposed to amazon who takes 1-3 weeks to ship it.

Matthew,

Thanks for the heads-up.

Interesting also that he has tackled Robin Holloway's Sonata, which was part of the ITG sponsored "Go Blow Your Horn" collection that John Wallace and I commissioned. Only the 2nd movement is found in GBYO, as "Melody with Echo".

I'm unfamiliar with Daniel Börtz' "Painting". Do any of our fellow TMers know it?

Exposed Throat came at the same time as Ariel and was probably sketched in Hakan's living room (!). It's a terrific piece and lots of my students (well, some) are playing it.

Many thanks,
EC

Ed,

How are the two Robin Holloway sonatas related? One is for solo trumpet and one is for two trumpets, but they were written at the same times, are cataloged as his "op. 94a" and "op. 94b," and are the same length. Is the second part simply optional? I'm not familiar with either save having the GBYO book.

I don't know the Börtz piece at all, but I enjoyed his Concerto and am very interested to hear it.

Matthew,

Hello from Los Angeles. Actually, I can answer that.

The Sonata (94a? -- probably what Hakan recorded) was premiered at the RAM by one of my ex Rotterdam students, Mark Kaptijn. Mark is/was a wonderful player but could scarcely get through it (a valient attempt, believe me, and well appreciated by the audience as such).Holloway was in attendance and decided to lessen the load by dividing it between two players, thus 94b.

There is a precedent for this, of course. Mauricio Kagel's wonderful Morceau de Concours (Universal Edition, Wien) exists in solo and 2 trumpet versions as well. A terrific piece rarely played.

Pax,
EC
