gregtrum84 has a spectacular aura about
Concerto St. Marc in D

Hi Ed,

I'm looking for a version of Albinoni's "Concerto St. Marc" that is arranged for D trumpet (or other high horn-I'm looking to play it on picc), but I can only find a Bb trumpet version. Was is written for D trumpet originally? Can you give me any leads on publishers or arrangers that I may be able get a D trumpet version from?

Best,

Greg

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

I believe it's published by Billaudot and available thru Robert King music.

Here's a recording of a saxophonist playing it!

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

I've found a number of different Albinoni concertos in different keys for trumpet in piano...does anybody know an alternate name for Concerto St. Marc? Is it also called "Concerto in D major" or another such name? Is there an opus number?

Thanks,

Greg

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

Greg,

It was originally an oboe solo, I believe. The original key is in Bb, and I believe that's the only key it's available in. I could be wrong. Great piece though!

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

Greg,

Others have weighed in so I have little to say other than it's easy to identify many of these Andre-inspired transcriptions as such since they're essentially chromatic (notes found outside the harmonic series). This (lovely) piece is probably for oboe, as mentioned, or another high instrument such as the violin or flute.

My only experience with it was, of all places, performing it with a touring company of the Ice Capades years ago (yes Virginia. . . they actually employed an orchestra -- performing in concert halls and skating on a plastic sheet onstage. This particular piece featured Jo Jo Starrbuck, the then wife of former Steelers quarterback Terry Brandshaw long before he got into broadcasting. No freezing tempertures, no hot chocolate, and, if I remember right, no audiences to speak of either). Yikes. What we do for money!

I think that Seth is right and the Billadout ediition for trumpet & keyboard would be in D.

Best,
EC

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

This thread is like a trip down memory lane for me. The St. Marc was the first solo I performed with the West Point Band back around in '85 or so.

I had first heard the piece performed by Martin Berinbaum on his Vanguard recording, which incidently has been re-issued on Vanguard Classics. It is a great recording!

Well, when he was in the West Point Band I guess he had Toshiko Akiyoshi arrange it for him and a small woodwind group, so when I got there I dusted it off and performed it from memory on the Bb side of my Selmer piccolo. I think he took the score with him because our library copy was literally photographed and printed on photo paper! I have never seen that before!
Some day I'll ask him.

By the way, I paid $425 in 1977 for that Selmer Paris A/Bb piccolo trumpet brand new which listed at $750. Not bad, eh?

Anyway, best wishes on learning it. The 1st movement is worth the price of admission alone! My edition is the Selmer edition. It is probably out of print by now. I have a Mel Broiles manuscript of it somewhere, too.

Re: Concerto St. Marc in D

Oops, everyone- a very good name dropper I am not! Pardon my mistake. The arranger of the St. Marc for trumpet and band was Emmett Yoshioka, known affectionately as Hawaii’s “Mr. Music." He was an arranger, pianist, flutist and saxophonist in our band several years ago.
