The Dog Days of Summer

TMers,

Sorry for not starting a new thread in quite a while. I'm starting my fourth week directing the music program at the California State Summer School for the Arts (junior CalArts in many respects) and have been swamped. There's that "s" word again.

My question for you tonight asks with one month before the start of a new academic year, what repertoire are you practicing? It's important to hit that first lesson in the fall at full speed and, presumably, you're much better after a summer of intensive practice. What will you bring to lesson #1, fall, 2008?

Best,
EC

The same as every year--"What is the sound between the notes?" Drives students crazy, but it does keep them from getting too cocky!

Ed,
I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual bag of tricks, and hitting some standard rep, as well as technique. I'm working on the OSM competition list, and of course, trying to work enough to have money to eat next year. *grins*

Re: The Dog Days of Summer

Paganini's Caprice 24...great stuff, though a bit hard. Transcribed as played by Alison Balsom.

Some orchestral stuff as always.

Re: The Dog Days of Summer

I am a bad, bad boy.

I spend my summers playing traditional jazz.
Just enough to get it out of my system before I start back on the classical repertoire.
Its fair to say I have very little discipline over the summer, but at least its enough to keep my lip in.

I have a solo performance of some Purcell at the end of September so my laziness will have to end soon.

There's nothing bad about playing jazz, Gordon. Even traditional jazz. :)

Cheers,

Re: The Dog Days of Summer

Ah, summer...and it's almost over. I've been working on a few things for this wedding gig...which is today and tomorrow! (rehearsal today, wedding tomorrow). Gotta be fun traveling 2-2 1/2 hours each way, two days in a row. I'm playing Festive Trumpet Tune by David German, Bach's Bist Du Bei Mir, and Mouret's Rondeau on picc. Should be a fun time! After that...I'm thinking I'm going to have to buckle down and practice on a few solos and some excerpts...

Re: The Dog Days of Summer

I've been working on a few different things. Earlier this Summer I did an Arban inventory where I went through the whole book just to see what aspects of my technique might need some extra attention and it's been very productive.

As far as repertoire (since CV), I've been looking at Stockhausen's Oberlippentanz and Kalevi Aho's Solo VII (just a little at this point). As soon as the rain clears up a bit here in Montréal I'll be headed down to school to do some more.

Re: The Dog Days of Summer

I injured one of my pectoral muscles lifting weights when I came back from holiday and its forced me to take a very relaxed approach to playing. The muscle is torn and it sits just over my ribs, if I expand my chest too much when I breath in the muscle lump rolls over the rib and its agony, as I found out the other day when I had to hit a double top C.

Anyway, I am now back on etudes, with the arban etudes being my aim for the next month. I have also been playing C trumpet a bit and I am happier with the way the instrument is set up now. Piccolo trumpet is still in being fixed but I have the cheap rotary one, which is actually better in many respects.

Oh and my $200 Bach TR 700 has been a bit of a revelation. Its a very solidly built instrument with very nice valves. The bell is surprisingly heavy weight.
