![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ellsworth TMers, I've remained silent about this competition as, since I've worked with a couple of those competing, I have horses in this race (one made the semis!). The semi-finalists have been announced: Fábio Brum (Brazil) Lukasz Gothszalk (Poland) Kazuaki Kikumoto (Japan) Huw Morgan (Great Britain) They will perform the Krzywicki Sonata this afternoon, and the finalists for tomorrow will be announced at the end of tonight's Judges' Recital. I'm going down to Boston shortly to listen a bit tonight and to have dinner with Steve, Gabri, and Jens and I'll report here anything that can be said publicly when I return. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ellsworth TMers, Last night's concert by the judges was fun. Gabri was sensational, as usual (ditto Steve & Jens), and I enjoyed hearing a piece for the first time (Gilliland Sonata). The finalists (listed alphabetically below) play the Concerto written for the competition tonight and 1st and 2nd prizes will be announced immediately afterwards. Fábio Brum (Brazil) Lukasz Gothszalk (Poland) Kazuaki Kikumoto (Japan) Terry Everson has done a wonderful job hosting the competition and it must be noted that there seemed to be none of the cut-throat attitude that this type of event often spawns. The "competitors" seemed anything but competitive towards each other. Bravo to them, to Terry, and to the jury for creating a positive atmosphere. Best, EC |

![]() | Re: Ellsworth Hey Ed, Have a quick somewhat Ellsworth related question. Kevin Gebo, recently came and played some of the pieces that he had prepared for the competition. He had copied out a few pages of the Henderson Variation Movements for us to look at, in particular the fifth movement. My question is why is it notated the way it is, specifically spread over three staves? I mean after hearing Kevin play through it and then going home and listening to the Hakan recording it is obviously a very difficult piece. Why add the complication of having to read the three staves simultaneously? It just seems to me that it would have been easier to put it all on one staff and give the performer a chance. Thanks for any info you have in advance. Peter Last edited by Trum Peter; 10-12-2008 at 09:36 PM. Reason: clarification |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ellsworth TPeter, Henderson's Variation Movements is a pretty good piece and one that I recommend to anyone attempting to explore long-form solo trumpet music. It certainly opens doors to even harder works (yikes). Some performers opt to copy the last movement onto one staff but color each contrapunctal line a different color. Whatever works, works. The point is to understand how each line relates to not only itself but to the others as well. Not bad music considering that Henderson is a hornist and conductor (the double whammie). Where did you hear Kevin? Best, EC |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ellsworth TMers, Final results are in from the competition: 1st prize ($10,000): Lukasz Gothszalk (Poland) 2nd prize ($5,000): Kazuaki Kikumoto (Japan) Special Judges Awards were given to finalists Fábio Brum (Novara prize), Kazuaki Kikumoto (Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar prize), and semi-finalist Huw Morgan (Banff prize). The latter was awarded by Jens Lindemann and the 2 former by Gabriele Cassone and Stephen Burns, respectively. Both Gabriele and Steve are on the faculty at Chosen Vale. Kudos to the ITG, judges, and host Terry Everson (who today is playing a semi-final round for the associate principal position in the BSO himself. . . tireless), for putting on this important event. Everyone who competed did so with honor and great musicianship. Bravi, EC |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Ellsworth Ed, I was really bummed I couldn't make it to any of the events last week. I'm sure the playing was spectacular and hang great! I really wish it didn't coincide with my busiest week I've ever had (cha-ching but AGGGGGH!) Back to memorization work. -t

![]() | Re: Ellsworth Hey Ed, To answer your question above, Kevin came and played for our trumpet class at the University of Maryland, where I am currently in my first year of masters work with Chris. It was a great class, and an even better hang after. TPeter |
