![]() | Encouragement I have a nephew that will enter school next year, he will be 5. He came over one time when I was practicing my cornet. I have a pocket trumpet on a stand in the MUSIC/guest/storage/sewing room. I have my cornet on a stand too, I play more if its out and ready. Anyway, He wants to play, though its not a toy, I let him see what he can do and it took a few times but he did make a recognizable noise. It was new years and we went out doors to make some noise. I got a couple of Kelly MP, and thinking about letting him have one so he can at least buzz with it. His Mom thinks this may be good prep for when he DOES start musically in school. I don't want to take him under my wings and teach him, but I don't want to discourage him in his obvious curiosity with trumpet. Thanks for being here on the site. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Encouragement Hi John, Thanks for the above. I'm never sure if what I offer here is useful to the majority of our members, but I enjoy the contact just the same. Re starting early, I'm hardly an expert as it's been years since I've taught beginning trumpet. That said, I started lessons with Ren Schilke when I was six years old, so... Why not spend some time with your nephew playing simple call-and-response passages? It can even be one or two notes -- just for him to get the sound of the trumpet in his ear and for him to observe you producing it. Kids are hard-wired for accurate imitation at that age. Best and please let us know how it goes, EC |

![]() | Re: Encouragement I looked at the resident experts and YOURS was the only one that mentioned TEACHER. My nephew is always curious when he comes over and I'm playing. And now that my Son is learning guitar "SERIOUSLY" from "Robbie's" Mom, She laughingly mentions a trade in lessons. I show Robbie the trumpet and she will show my Son Bryan, some chords. A good tade off I would say. I think I will work on buzzing for now. Though we do have the pocket trumpet for him to try out with...its just the right size for him. I will try to get a picture for the forum. Thanks for your prompt response. |
